Head of Design Department (F/M)

Reporting to: Division Manager
Territory: UAE - GCC



Under the guidance of the Division Manager, the Head of Design Department will play a key role in the overall success of our organisation by planning, managing, and monitoring engineering/design functions. The Head of Design Department is responsible for managing and developing procedures geared toward the efficiency of a project development.


Project execution:

  • Supporting the Business Development team signing business and revenue growth by doing 3D design which match the client’s expectations
  • Responsible for ensuring that designers produce designs with reference to the current furniture and general stock
  • Research new trends & design concepts
  • Ensure delivery of execution drawings:
    • Define and prioritise delivery of all technical drawing needed to execute projects
    • Ensure all drawings are delivered on time to Project Managers and Head of Division
  • Organise the Technical Document package:
    • Define, clarify and develop a professional set of technical documents (Drawings, BOQ…) needed to execute Electra projects
    • Develop a professional Design Office with relevant tools / process/ organisation (development of our Pytha library for all standard elements)
    • Give Input for costing phase (with Project Manager/Account Manager)
    • Develop and train a professional team to handle all engineering of all Electra projects (GCC)
  • Answer questions and resolve issues brought forward by the detailing team members
  • Serve as the engineering leader and technical expert
  • Check and confirm the accuracy of the work performed and the methods used by Designer & Detailer staff
  • Make sure of the feasibility of any technical drawings in terms of production (How it will be produced before drawing)


Team Management:

  • Staff recruitment, training and management
  • Team planning & work load:
    • Plans allocation of Designer & Detailer (and outside resources if needed) for the upcoming jobs
    • Validate his staff planning (leave)
    • Request and monitor his free-lancing requirement
    • Ensure that his staff follow Electra Administration rules and policy


Knowledge & Experience

  • Number of years of Experience:
    • 3 to 4 years’ experience in a senior draftsman role or senior designer or Head of Engineering & Architecture
  • Education:
    • Educated to degree level (preferably Masters) in a relevant design discipline
  • Systems:
    • Highly proficient in CAD systems
    • Knowledge about Pytha, Revit Software (3D Technical drawings),3Ds max, V-ray, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Sketchup, Rhinoceros, Solidworks
  • Language:
    • English


Technical & Functional Skills (Identify here the functional skills that apply to the specific job requirements as well as the required abilities to perform)

  • Ability to lead technical projects from concept to completion
  • Experience working with a “real world” production environment
  • Ability to read & understand complex drawings
  • Extensive experience with drafting methods and tools
  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography & limitations of design work
  • The ability to storyboard or translate ideas to designers and others
